    Hello all. I’ve been blessed to receive a few eagles recently of some bulk snuff from Toque.

    How is everyone storing these bags? I’m currently operating under a few assumptions.

    Once the bag has been opened, it needs to be a priority to work through it.  It should be fully consumed within 6 months or so.

    The second being it is ok to leave in the tobacco in an opened bag upwards of many months as long as it is in a cool, dry and dark place and the zip lock seal is still working well. Opening maybe once a week to transfer a week’s worth to various consumption containers.

    Lastly, if the bag is still factory sealed it’s good for at least a year or so? Maybe longer? As long as it’s in a cool, dry, dark place?

    Wondering if I need to be moving the opened bags to jars, or even moving unopened bags to jars? Should open bags be in a humidor? Just wanting to understand best practices for bag storage and making sure I don’t kill my snuff!

    I’m curious about this as well.  I’m assuming sealed tins will last and maybe even mature and improve like pipe tobacco for a long time.  No idea on plastic bags of bulk snuff.  Should it be kept in a humidor?

    Ken, you are spot on.  The only thing I can add is that an unopened bag stored in a cool place is likely to last many years, and still retain its flavour.  Humidors are great for opened tins but a kilnar jar is great for opened bags.

    I put large amounts of open snuffs in glass mason jars, and I have some in little plastic pill boxes.  I’ve had some for coming up on 2 years now and they’re fine.  I think there’s a hint of plastic smell in some of the pill case ones, but they’re still fine as far as flavor and moistness.  I have some tins I keep in heavy duty ziplock bags when not in use as well.

    They are stored in a cool dark basement if that matters.

    I bought a lot of large amounts when I started because I’m just like that.

    I keep half a year’s worth of snus in my basement freezer at any given time too.

    I can confirm that Kilner jars work.  Iv’e spent the last few years working my way through 5 * 400g bulk buy bags  bought before the move to the isle and have to say the last few snorts were just as fresh and tasty (probably the  wrong word – do i mean smelly) as the first.

    Wouldn’t it make sense to put the snuff directly in the jar. I would think the fuller the jar the better. less oxygen. For that matter if I purchased a 400g bag, why not put it tightly packed in 2 or more jars so I can open only the jar I’m pulling from without exposing the full 400g to oxygen.

    I think that’s what the recommendation was. If it’s open put it in a jar, if it’s not open leave it unopened and get to it when you get to it.
