    To begin with, what does S.P. stand for

    Opinions differ!

    The current best explanation is that it stands for the style of snuff developed by Sales & Pollard, English snuff manufacturers in the 19th century. This was before product names could be trademarked, so it became a generic term.

    Others say it means SpecialSpanish or Sheffield Pride.
