My good friend, who I sadly have yet to meet, Allen Brill on Facebook was writing about how good Toque tins are, but mentioned his mother had Alzheimers and wondered about the connection to aluminium.  I find that quite interesting.  Could aluminium be the curse of the 21st century.

My mother who used aluminium cooking pots in her kitchen all her life is about to turn 90, her elder sister is 94 and her younger brother is 86.  My mother has Alzheimers yet she smoked 30 a day and snuffed all her life from the age of 13 to 89.  She drank half a bottle of wine a day and a few G&T’s.  Her sister, who is amazing, stopped smoking back in the 70’s and drank a couple of glasses a week.  Really,  she isn’t that much healthier but is much brighter; no Alzheimers.  Her Brother, who lived in Canada and smoked dope, mixed with tobacco, all his life stopped running marathons when he turned 80.  Their health is amazing.

All of my relatives smoked yet 98% of them got to over 95, are we wrong in criticising tobacco?  Is their such a thing as good tobacco?

Interesting idea, however, I do not think Alzheimer’s might be associated with aluminum.

People who drink and don’t exercise or at least try to live healthy and of course, not learning new skills and training memory, are usually the most affected ones. I have and had many relatives with similar problems and the cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s were always linked to their lifestyle.

My grandma is a much more tougher case, refuses to eat, smokes 3 packs a day, drinks a lot and while very old, she has the most issues with her menthal health, mostly memory loss.

I do admit, her eating habits and penchant for pharmaceuticals (not for getting high), and lack of quality exercise, was most likely the largest culprit for her demise. Never smoked or drank, never did drugs. It was very undeserving, as she gave to those who needed to a fault, and did without for herself. But I have read many articles and studies, years past, that connected Alzheimer’s to aluminum. Aluminum, it seems has the ability to pass through the brain barrier, unlike most metals. At least these studies implied so. I would have to do some searching for it. I’ve been a natural medicine follower since about 1990. It has served me very well, so far. ALL preparations for natural remedies call for non aluminum pans, I’ve always assumed, for this reason.

Looking through some articles on studies, and found some conflicting (of coarse) info, but I don’t trust studies with links/funding from pharma. This one seemed quite genuine in findings. I had read in the 80s (I wish I could remember the medical magazine) a study that brought up the possibility of this dilemma, and I have a tendency to follow things over time. We all thought mom was just a bit odd, but looking back, I believe she suffered from toxicity of more than just the aluminum. Hack doctors had her on over 30 medications for one thing or another. But she did love her aluminum. Pots, pans, utensils, antiperspirant, skin cream, etc. I started back then reading all the labels in the house, and was shocked at the amount of everyday products containing aluminum.

Of all the things slowly killing us, snuff tins are not even on my radar. People should focus more on healthy eating habits and achieving active lifestyles.

I absolutely agree with you, @tompanepinto. This wasn’t a crusade for me, though. I merely mentioned my distaste for aluminum. I try to eat good, but this American FDA doesn’t make it easy. So I try to eat vegetables and smaller portions of meat. Exercise is one thing I personally need to work on, but I read labels on everything and try to make the best choices in diet. I don’t eat processed foods if I can help it, and stay away from snack foods. Corn chips and salsa seem to be my biggest weakness! I know those corn chips are just empty calories, tho.

Are your tins bare aluminum or are they plastic lined like beverage aluminun cans are? If they are plastic lined it won’t leech aluminum.

I ride a Motorcycle in Boston and fly around the world on a busted 22 year old freight airplane.  Not worried about an aluminum tin.

If I’m going to die from aluminum, it’ll probably be the airplane.

bare.  There is a liner in the lid that I’m guessing is to maintain the air tight seal.  They screw together nicely.

They are the best tins of the industry snuffs. No doubt. I order a few, but I don’t carry them, and usually decant. It’s my hang up. I don’t expect anyone to follow, and I don’t expect Roderick to change to a different tone for one guys perception. I’d be happy if they were steel but I’m ok with it, as is. I probably started something that really isn’t much of an argument, and wasn’t really intending to. 😏

I decant as well, from large Toque tins to the ten gram. like  them very much. Not to concerned about aluminum. I’m leaning on the genetic predisposition being more responsible for these ailments. Diet and exercise will really go a long way, and its probably the only real thing that helps fend off the bummers of growing older. Add a little moderation to those questionable substances and habits too. I’d like to see Toque get in those plastic snuff boxes that everyone is wanting. I would probably buy 4 or 5. Wood is not a good snuff box material for storing longer than a day. Until then its aluminum.

If you feel you have a genetic predisposition, you should do what you can to prevent it, right? So, I will continue in my belief that aluminum causes brain disorders, and I don’t expect a following. It’s my preference to not cook with, ever, or handle aluminum on a daily basis. I’m not afraid to buy in a toque tin, as it hasn’t begun oxidation and transference is practically absent. We all have our preferences and this is one of mine. I wish it hadn’t become such a topic, really, and I should have not mentioned it. But I am passionate about natural health, though it’s a hard row to hoe in this FDA controlled food industry. Meat and veggies are all I prefer to eat, and those are questionable. But I’m content to decant snuff. It’s ok. The performance of the Toque tins are second to none, and I DO wish they were steel, or even a nice grade of plastic. The old Singletons Super Menthol tap tin has become a favorite of mine. But this is just me. I expect no one to change, least of all Toquesnuff, though Roderick has an amazing customer service, I am just one person.  Everyone loves the tins. I can change a lot easier than he can change an established favorite. Waiting on those German snuff/tap boxes to show up in accessories. I believe those may be a great option.
