I love coffee. American style, cappuccinos, macchiatos, coffee ice cream, coffee candy, I love it all.
So far I’ve tried Gawith Hoggarth Cafe Regal, Samuel Gawith Black Arabica, 6 Photo Coffee Kick, and Bernard Schmalzlerfranzl Fresco.
I’ll review all here.
6 Photo Coffee Kick – I ordered this with my first order and forgot I had it. It is BAD. initially tasted soapy and artificial. I’ve had others that have a bit of a soapy taste when you first open it, but it goes away after it ages a little. I’ve had this one for a year and I just hit it again it’s still awful. The flavor just tastes fake, like plastic. It does have a nice spicy kind of finish, (Indian I guess) but I’m pretty sure I’m going to dump it in the bin.
Gawith Hoggarth Cafe Regal – Not bad, definitely tastes like black coffee, but it has a bit of an old burnt coffee taste to me. It does have a nice nic burn and lingers well. I’ll do it, I don’t hate it, but I don’t see ever getting more. The Sam Gawith is way better.
Samuel Gawith Black Arabica – My favorite strait coffee flavor I’ve had so far. It’s got a nice coffee taste, like with a touch of cream maybe, but definitely coffee all the way. Also has a little of that burnt taste, but it’s nice. Good hit, lingers nicely. Good overall. Better than the other coffees so far.
Bernard Schmalzlerfranzl Fresco – My favorite of this list, but it’s not a strait coffee flavor. There’s coffee there, but there’s a lot more going on. Complex flavors, a little sweet with like fig or plumb, cocoa maybe mixed with molasses and a definite coffee finish. Not sure of the actual flavors, but that’s what I get out if it (not sure how calibrated my nose is). A little harder on the nose than I expected from a schmalzler, I expected it to be super easy like Gawath original or Otto schmalzler, but still easy to take, nice nic burn, and the flavor lasts a looooong time with a little drip at the end. It’s not something I can do a lot of, but I LOVE it. The flavor is long lasting and great. This will be a regular order for me. Also, goes great with Scotch.
I’m going to try Silver Dollar coffee next. Any other coffee recommendations are welcome.
Thanks
I’m a little late but I find it interesting that you found the GH to have the burnt coffee flavor. I found the black arabica to have a burnt plastic kind of scent, though it was extremely dry when I received it and I’ve never gotten around to ordering a proper tin. I do think it’s in my cart now though.
Cafe Regal is one of my absolute favorites but I was never able to pick up much coffee, mostly just leathery tobacco.
Fresco didn’t impress me much but I’m not too big on schmalzlers. I’m rummaging through some boxes right now trying to find it, every snuff deserves a second chance.
Coffee Kick had a good coffee and cream scent but it stings more than any snuff I’ve had. It’s not a burn, it’s not just a little sharp, it has a lingering sting that I’ve never gotten from any other snuff. I’ve tried all the 6 photos too.
SNUV Black Eye is just bad all around.
Paul Gotard Coffee just tastes like molasses. I can’t find any coffee in it.
SNUV Nutty Joe is pretty good. Like a sweet cappuccino. I do get a bit of that sting but nearly as bad as the coffee kick.
I hope you tried the Silver Dollar because that and Dholakia Coffee Bite are the best coffees I’ve had. Very similar to each other. Neither is too sweet, they both have a great and very prominent coffee scent. Silver Dollar is a little easier to take so it’s usually the one I reach for first thing in the morning.
Corrections:
I didn’t have all my tins when I was writing that but I found the others now. They’re all a little drier than when I first tried them.
Fresco has more coffee notes than I originally tasted. Thanks for making me revisit it. it’s going in my pocket for the day.
Black Eye dried out a lot but the flavor actually improved. a lot more coffee and less dirty butter than it had before. I still wouldn’t buy it again.
Paul Gotard… it seems to have lost all that molasses. Still nothing close to coffee. It’s developed a scent exactly like the washcloth that stayed damp in your shower for too long. Is it mold? Mildew? I can’t get the smell out of my nose. I would not recommend it.
Bingus, I’ve never tried any SNUVs, I might have to give it a go. I now love Silver Dollar coffee, it’s one of my go tos. I always have some on the road with me now. Snuffing some as I type this. It goes great with Irish whisky too.
And if you like the Fresco as I do, the Artisan Robusta is just awesome. My favorite when sipping a nice Scotch.
Robusta has been in my cart for a bit now, same with Black Arabica. I’m getting pretty excited to put the order in. Carlsbader from Rosinski may be another you’ll want to try, the coffee is there but subtle. You can never go wrong with Rosinski. Silver Dollar still gets my vote for best coffee scent.
I’ll give the Carlsbader a try. Thanks.
Cafe regal is ok.
Samuel Gawith BLACK ARABICA:
I don’t get a taste of coffee at all. I do get that ammonia/manure smell. So, I’d say that I just taste tobacco. Reminds me of Copenhagen moist dip snuff.
