An update. It seems that border and customs agents are on strike, among others. This won’t mess with US orders, since they’re sent through courier (unless they have to also pass though customs?) but I’m worried about making an order to Canada since it uses the postal service. Maybe Roderick will know what’s going on.
I find that a snuff spoon (aka paddle) is a bit more foolproof (along with the continental method of doing it off a body part like the back of the hand), as you don’t have to worry about your fingers as much and can concentrate on the nose. However, there is something to be said for pinching if you get the method right. I personally have been pinching a lot more.
My FAVOURITE way to take snuff (besides off of a girl, I will try this and report back), is using a South African snuff like Taxi. They come in plastic containers so you can bend the lid in such a way that you can dip for some snuff, then it makes an almost perfect sniffing surface without very much mess. I saw it on a documentary about the “dangers” of snuff, they had two maids from South Africa who were snuffing in this method, and it has greatly improved my love of Taxi brand snuff.
You have my address too Roderick! LOL
I’m snuffing a bit of Rosinski Alter Fritz – https://www.toquesnuff.com/product/rosinski4/
Great apricot scent, love it
Just did some Toque Apricot again because I remembered it. Not my favourite, but it is is good.
Of course, working on my Red Bull stash as well.
Update: The Med No99 seems to have taken care of itself as I have misplaced it. I think I brought it with me to a New Years Eve Party but don’t remember doing it there. I was the “snuff guy” and letting people try Wilsons of Sharrow Blonde or Grand Cairo (forget which one, they’re quite similar), one guy particularly liked it and kept coming back for more. Oh well, I still have some MED in a bullet, it wasn’t too dear to me but it’s still sad to lose such a quantity of snuff.
I don’t notice a difference in the scent between pinching and the snuff spoon. I mostly notice it in getting stuff on my fingers and underneath of my fingernails when pinching, so using a spoon/paddle is definitely cleaner in that respect. I had tried going back to pinching and found I was getting it more accurately where I wanted and seemingly less blockages, but this could just be me getting complacent using the snuff spoon. I’d just try both and see what works best to you, there’s not going to be a best method for everyone. Apparently in Germany they do it more off of the hand rather than pinching or paddles, it seems like this would be functionally equivalent to using a paddle.
Hey Roderick, two things:
1. Orders to Canada are sent using Isle of Man postal service – I read from another company that parcels leaving the UK are impacted due to an alleged “cyber attack” and aren’t being accepted at this time. Will this affect us getting shipments? I may have to get you to send to another address in case it won’t arrive within a month since I’m moving.
2. Logging into the forum is very difficult, I had to first disable my VPN service, and then use a basically brand new Firefox browser with no extensions. Only then I was able to log in. I emailed you about this but I haven’t heard anything back. I am unable to log in on Brave (my main browser), even with the adblocking disabled on the site. For some reason, I never get challenged to do the captcha it either fails or works without me doing anything like selecting pictures that match a category (like on other sites with captcha).
Thanks Rod, keep up the good work!
I’d recommend trying a variety of different snuffs until you find out what you like. Sure, you’ll end up with some you don’t like, but that’s part of the fun of determining your tastes.
Menthol – Red Bull and Jip! are my absolute favourites. Otto Red Rag is like Red Bull if you prefer to use an in-house brand. These have menthol and eucalyptus, and are my top snuffs, but you might not like them. Other menthols may have or may omit certain elements or be even stronger in the menthol, like Hedges The Snuff.
SP – these remind me of Earl Grey Tea, or natural Swedish Snus, with a bergamot flavour to them. Toque Original or Extra SP are excellent examples, as well as J&H Wilson SP No 99. There’s plenty of others, just look for more “unflavoured” or natural ones.
Flavoured (non-menthol) – there are tons of excellent flavours, from Toque Spanish Gem (think Juicy Fruit gum!) to fruit flavours like Apricot (I didn’t like this one as much, but you may like it!), to more dark coffee flavours like Artisan Dark Rappee or Robusta Rappee (both were good but might be a bit intimidating). Tons of flavours to be had here, you probably know what kind of flavours you prefer, but these may surprise you.
Flavoured (mentholish) – stuff like Otto Raspberry Menthol is really nice, same with Toque Cherry Menthol or Rosinski Alter Friz (although the menthol isn’t very strong in this one)
Basically I would order a small amount (perhaps a tap tin?) or examples from the four main “food groups” I’ve laid out here. This is not an exact science and many snuffs do not fit in one or another category perfectly, and sometimes straddle the line between two or more categories, or create their own category that I haven’t considered in the post. But the important part is finding what you prefer, and note that your tastes may change over time. I started off chasing the menthol until I kind of went too far, and started to appreciate the more natural flavours like SP. I still like menthol, it’s just not my only thing.
Hey RamSeva, not Roderick but I can tell you a bit:
Some rule prevents tobacco from being sent through the postal service in the US. You have to use a courier service like FedEx or UPS.
this is different than Canada, where you can send stuff through the postal service. So I can’t speak to how US orders work. I’m certain they would send each individual order to the US rather than having a warehouse there. Good luck!
Red Bull is VERY good. I finished the ones I had on hand and patiently await another couple 7.5g being delivered tomorrow, hopefully! (Monday 19 Dec)
I just mixed some Mullins & Westley Mature Crumbled and Jip! at 3:1 ratio, the recipe called for Jock’s Choice but I went with what I had. Gonna let it settle and try some tomorrow, the preliminary results were quite good. Just did some Jip! as I opened a fresh tin, love the stuff… gonna have to get more. Almost to the point of needing to go economy style, but I can only do so much medicated snuff.
I ended up having a virgin Caesar at a concert I went to, wasn’t too good. Nice to get the taste of it though, but no veggies or anything were added, wasn’t really feeling it though. Being at a concert without drinking and smoking weed is a bit like eating cookies with missing ingredients, just doesn’t taste the same.
Oh, and I just made a mixture of Toque Crazy George with J&H Wilson Med. No99, the latter is often a bit too strong so i put less of it in it, around 3:2 ratio, as I think the George could use just a bit of a kick, as the flavour is very interesting.
I hope I get my order tomorrow! That would be great, it’s super cold here right now so any good news would be welcome.
Haha Bob I need to do that. The order before last I woke up in the middle of the night all bleary eyed and did an order, was somewhat of a surprise what I got when it arrived. A pleasant surprise though, for sure.
Been doing a bit of Toque Apricot today, reminds me strongly of Peaches and Cream oatmeal, very creamy!
this thread reminded me of the Dark Rappee which is also really good, lives up to its name.
Of course still doing Jip! I am certain I got a couple more on my next order. Along with Aztec and Warm Glow, looking forward to trying them.
reposting because it didn’t seem to go through:
RE: hangover
Here in Canada we mostly do drinks called “Caesar’s”, I think they closely resemble a Bloody Mary though. Always on special on Sundays for the hungover. Made primarily with clamato juice (yes, clam and tomato), usually vodka but also sometimes gin, Worcestershire and Tabasco, and an assortment of things on skewers added on top, from veggies like olives to pickles to a stick of beef jerky. Even had an Ultimate Caesar that had tons of stuff including a small hamburger on a stick in the drink, was quite the experience. One place nearby even adds a bit of horseradish to theirs for an extra kick. But I’m off the sauce, might try a virgin one if I get a big enough craving.
Grand Cairo is in the order I just made, along with more WoS Africa (which I’m just using today and will finish soon, my tin is pretty dry). Also got more Camphor and Clove (Toque) which blows my mind how good it is. Also got some more Jip! because of course you gotta have Jip!
Hey Roderick, just so you know the ReCaptcha service seems to not be working correctly, or maybe it just doesn’t like my VPN. Instead of making me click things, it never pops up and just says failed. I was only able to log in after disabling my VPN, it didn’t work the first time but let me in after the second attempt.
Oh, I ended up finding some paddles at Walmart, they are technically BBQ skewers, I just make them shorter by cutting them and then sand them off. I bought one package and it had MANY, the only annoyance is making new ones but they are excellent for the task.

We don’t have priority shipping to Canada, but there is an option for shipping insurance for $1, do you see that if you pretend to make an order to a US address?
that is really unfortunate though, I thought UPS didn’t usually deliver parcels to PO Boxes? I’m seeing mixed results when searching for it, one says they do others say they need a street address and will call you if it is directed to a PO Box. Maybe that’s why they messed up?
Interesting, I’m not one for aniseed, I used to hate black licorice and can now barely tolerate it. Hopefully someone who enjoys it will see this and have or get the ingredients.
It’s hard to say, since I rarely just use a single variety in a day. But I don’t think I’m at 10g, probably closer to 4 or even less, even if I’m doing it all day. I guess I could try to measure how often I do it and estimate volume if I wanted. I will usually do a little vape during the day as well, just to satisfy the mouth movement that I sometimes feel I need.
I have a large tin of J&H M.E.D. No99 that’s almost empty, but ended up getting another huge tin by mistake so been focusing on finishing it.
Also Toque SP Extra which is EXCELLENT, highly recommend if you like SPs. Been doing a few others throughout the day.
I found my Toque Cherry Menthol and have been using it a fair bit. Now I need to get some more natural and toast snuffs with my next order. Running low on Natural Toast and Quit! and I’d like to try Original (all Toque) and will get some more McCrystals Smokers Blend which has an amazing hint of bergamot.
I’m not from Portugal but you might have luck if you look into other nearby countries. The UK no longer being in the EU may complicate it. The orders I get ship from the Isle of Man.
Do you know if your government has fairly high taxes on tobacco? If customs find tobacco in a package (arriving in Canada) they let it through but put a hefty duty on it, which is done for all tobacco products to “discourage” you from using them (and make money for the govt)
if taxes aren’t high (and Canada has some of the highest) they may have less incentive to intercept and put duty on your snuff. I’d imagine it would be similar to Spain and other EU countries, but everywhere is different. Good luck!
eayob, I believe that if they sent it with a courier rather than postal service, you would be guaranteed to have to pay customs duty.
I’ve been pretty lucky (I’m in Alberta), only one order (my first, with a “Bullet” in a bag included) got hit with duty, but my last few orders of the same size have made it through no problem and quite quickly.
Seems to be random enforcement though, I used to order snus and it was fine at first but later it seemed every order was dinged with duty. Almost makes me think that a customs agent had flagged my address for orders coming from Sweden, but that might just be a bit of paranoia.
Interesting stuff Roderick and Jet Fixer, I’ll try a similar regime. The Neti Pot does help a lot, didn’t think about using it in the morning
Somewhat off topic, I emailed about getting a J&H Wilson No99 (Menthol) rather than the No1 (SP) I ordered in Order #39373. I emailed sales@toque but maybe my message wasn’t clear and I didn’t get a response yet,
Also, is there any plans to get some of the Simply Snuff Snuffs on hand? I don’t know if he’s been in contact with you at all, but he has some newly made snuffs that were just made a couple weeks ago. They are available from a competitor right now but I’d prefer to continue to support Toque since you guys have been really good for me.
Have a nice day!
Oh interesting, I was thinking mentholated would be more likely to OPEN your sinus, but maybe that’s why I’ve been feeling a bit blocked up especially when sleeping, doing a fair amount of menthol snuff.
I have been doing some neti pots and it helps a lot but is still a bit of an issue. I’ll try dialing back on the menthol and see if that makes a difference.
Good luck with your lady friend, she might turn her nose up at (lol) snuff, if she’s used to dip/chew. But it’s worth a shot.
Unfortunately I think only orders to the US are tracked, since there is some law that tobacco can’t be sent in the regular mail. The orders that I get sent to Canada don’t have any tracking information, I guess it would be the same for most other countries including Morocco. Good luck, I hope you get your order!
No sorry! I’m from Canada. I haven’t heard of anyone on the forum who has said they were from Morocco. Is the government really anti-tobacco? Do they have high taxes? That seems to be why the Canadian government is after small shipments of tobacco, just to get their $$$.
The Stormbreaker is good, but if you don’t like mentholated/medicated you’re not going to like it unfortunately. Maybe consider selling/trading it in the Marketplace?
I thought I really loved medicated snuffs, but lately i seem to be turning my nose up at them. Perhaps just have done too much and need to take a break. Unfortunately, I have three giant tins of Stormbreaker, Hedges’ The Snuff, and J&H Wilson Medicated No99, and a medium tin of McCrystal’s O&G, a close to empty McCrystal’s Sunrise, along with a couple small tins of Jip! and three full 7.5G tap tins of Red Bull, LOL. The last two are a bit more easy going, perhaps just because I’ve already gone through a couple small tins of Jip! and almost two tap tins of Red Bull.
Maybe I just have to power through the initial burn and just get used to one or a mix of these as a daily driver. Or they could be situational, only good for when I feel in the mood for some chill. Then again, I have been taking some of the Medicated No99 while writing this post and craving more…. good to have choices!
Salaam. It really depends on customs of your country, I’m from Canada and when I would order Swedish snus, it would get through fine at first, but then more and more would get caught by customs, until it was pretty much every time (almost like orders from Sweden to my address were flagged). Fortunately it would still arrive, just delayed, but would have a large duty put on it to (almost) match the price you’d pay in a store (since Canada has really high tobacco taxes). Still worth doing because we only have one brand of snus available in stores and that brand is not very good. With snuff, the first order arrived delayed with a duty almost equal to the value of the snuff, but subsequent orders have arrived quite easily it seems, and fast, with no duty. The first order had a “bullet” in it, which might have attracted more attention both due to the name and since it isn’t a sealed container.
Sorry I couldn’t fully answer your question, but I wish you the best of luck!
Oh darn, I forgot to use the code. No worries, it’s not a big deal (although the code is a GOOD deal haha). I appreciate it regardless!
I highly recommend checking out “Simply Snuff” on YouTube, he will frequently tell you the “vitamin N” content of the snuff he reviews (nicotine being a no-no word there I take it).
You can’t really go wrong with Toque Quit or McCrystal’s Smokers for high nicotine, but I haven’t tried the latter.
There’s lots of different flavour profiles, some people like me prefer more menthol, eucalyptus, etc, often called “medicated” snuff, but others like other flavours. You should try a few different ones if you have the means to. There’s tons of other flavours such as “toasts” which seem to do the trick for cravings for me and have a smokey type profile. Just check out Toque’s website for all the different flavours on offer, you could spend a lot of time with just the in-house brands (Toque, Silver Dollar, Artisan, and Toque USA iirc). You can get a wide variety of fruit flavours if you have a preferred one. There’s also SPs which have a very interesting flavour that I need to order more of, Simply Snuff will sometimes call a snuff a “Top Banana!” as in his favourites, and Wilsons of Sharrow “Best SP” was one of them, and I agree, very good snuff.
Some things to consider as well are some are a bit more difficult to take than others. Something like the “Quit!” above or another with a somewhat medium grind is usually the easiest for beginners, while fine ground snuff can be hard to keep in the nose where you want it, and course ground (which are often prized) can present their own issues for newbies.
Best of luck, and if you have any questions feel free to ask us. Someone should know the answer, hopefully!
I have been getting back into a few bands that I forgot about (long story short, my computer broke and wasn’t replaced, then lost basically all my CDs and stuff except an iPod Touch, then the iPod Touch died before I could get the music off), so I’m always finding out new (old) stuff. I had a demo CD that came with the Official Dreamcast Magazine, which had a video for Jurassic 5’s Quality Control on it, loved that video and still love them today now that I’ve found them again, so I can say my eclectic taste even includes some hip hop.
On Last.fm, I’ve scrobbled 170k songs (sent them to be recorded from a music player) from 5k artists. I have been using YouTube Music a lot recently and I just finally looked into scrobbling from a browser so I’ll be adding more and more often.
My favourite band according to last.fm, by far and away, is England’s The Fall. I love the lyrics which are VERY hard to pin down the meaning on. The repetitive musical accompaniment is always the same, but always different based on what era it’s from. They made 30+ albums with the only member staying the same the whole time was the vocalist, who died recently, and thus The Fall was finished.
Another band worth mentioning is The Smashing Pumpkins. I had a few tapes and CDs in the late 90s and early 2000s, but the very first time I had digital music was when that band had a dispute with their label, and released their album MACHINA II online for all who wanted it. I later got into file sharing and digital music eventually became the main way I listen (although I have some burned CDs for my car stereo when not using the FM transmitter with my phone).
As for live shows, my two favourite shows have been seeing Streetlight Manifesto (although the opening act was a letdown), and an amazing show done by a Winnipeg band called the SubCity Dwellers (hard to find their music sometimes, like only one album is YT Music for example). The story for the latter one is interesting, they booked a show in a university town during Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, so barely anyone showed up. There were actually more people in the band on stage than in the crowd, if you didn’t count the people working the bar. Still, they played an amazing show, including some fantastic reggae/ska type takes on The Clash songs. Maybe you had to be there…
I think it has to do with snuff getting stuck on the outside of the tin, have a Luz tin that is not made by Toque which is a bit tricky, but just have to not close it super tight and make sure the sides of the tin and lid don’t get to messy i think.
